Understanding Dividends Part II: Dates and Payments
Hi investors / soon-to-be investors,
Since our first dividend-focussed blog post back in November 2018, our Inherent Value Index (IVI) Portfolio has received a couple of dividend payments - always well-received by the Start Investing Community!
To recap: the definition of a dividend -
"That part of profit paid to ordinary shareholders, usually on a regular basis."

to Investing; the definitive companion to investing and the financial markets
'
Dividends form one of the cornerstones of our value investing strategy, and because of this, we will only invest in companies who choose to share their profit with hard-working investors.
- Don't forget: "No dividend? No deal!" (Yes, we've stuck with the slogan!)
Now, when it comes to dividends, there are 3 key dates you need to look out for, they are:
1. The Declaration Date
It is on this date that the company paying the dividend will announce the two other important dates for investors: the first being when investors have to have invested in order to be eligible for the next dividend, and the second being when the next dividend payment will be made to the shareholders.
2. The Ex-Dividend Date
In order to receive the next dividend payment from the company, you must have invested before the ex-dividend date stated. Generally speaking, you need to have invested at least one day before the ex-dividend date, which is often referred to as the 'record date'.
Put simply, if you purchase shares before the ex-dividend date, you are eligible for the next dividend payment. If you purchase on or after the ex-dividend date, you will not receive the dividend payment.
3. Payment Date
This is the date on which the company will pay all eligible shareholders the dividend as outlined on the Declaration Date.
It can take a little while to get your head around the terminology, but stick with it, it'll soon become second nature.
Our favourite website, which is solely dedicated to the wonders of dividends, can help you track historic and up-coming dividend dates for the companies you are invested in.

Here's an example of how to use this extremely helpful tool...
Take our August 2018 Stock Pick, Pets at Home Group PLC (ticker symbol PETS ).
On the main Dividend Data homepage, type the ticker symbol into the search bar:
When you hit 'Search', all of the up-coming dividends will be displayed first, followed by the historic information:
As you can see, as of today - 14th January 2019, there are no upcoming dividends for Pets at Home. However, it is easy to see the breakdown of those 3 important dividend dates underneath.
Our Monthly Stock Picks and Dividends
Every one of our 2018 monthly stock picks were dividend-paying companies. This is a 'deal breaker' for us when we screen for stocks each month.
